Protect and restore terrestrial carbon stores

Protect and restore terrestrial carbon stores

Avoiding emissions of terrestrial carbon stored in the soils and biomass of forests, peatlands and wetlands represents the largest potential single opportunity for cost-effective greenhouse gas mitigation. ECA advocates for an equitable and transparent REDD+ mechanism for keeping carbon in the soils and biomass of forests & wetlands intact and out of the atmosphere.

Annex 1: coverage of all major sources and sinks of LULUCF GHG

Nationally appropriate mitigation actions and commitments by developed countries should be comprehensive and ambitious; ensure coverage of anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and removals from all major sources and sinks of GHGs, including emissions and removals from LULUCF including wetlands in a land-based net-net accounting approach.

Leadership in developed countries for reducing demand forest products

Leadership is required from developed countries to apply demand-side management to focus on reducing demand for, and trade in, forest products (especially those produced unsustainably or in contravention of national and international law), through policies in their own countries as well as support for relevant policies and measures in developing countries.
