NEW REDD TEXT BUT STILL TALKING; OFFSETS QUESTIONABLE
REDD+ report for Thursday 8 December – 12:30
Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation and the role of conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest carbon stocks in developing countries
Background: New draft on finance appeared at noon but negotiators are still talking.
Outlook: Still five options on the table regarding finance. Given ongoing disagreement, the broader finance language in Option 2 would appear the best way forward.
Agrees that results based finance provided to developing party countries may come from a wide variety of sources, public and private, bilateral and multilateral, including alternative sources
Quote from Nils Hermann Ranum, Rainforest Foundation Norway: “Private investors should have no expectations for carbon market offsets in the near future given the failure to progress on ensuring safeguards and reference levels here in Durban.”
The Ecosystems Climate Alliance is comprised of eleven NGOs and a variety of affiliate organizations and individuals committed to keeping natural terrestrial ecosystems intact and their carbon out of the atmosphere. We are available for interviews, background and analysis. CONTACT: Don Lehr on +1 917 304 4058, dblehr@cs.com, or find us at the metal tables outside under the tent at the main entrance to ICC.
