FORESTS REPORT DURBAN –TUESDAY 6 DECEMBER
from the Ecosystems Climate Alliance
GLOBAL WITNESS / ECA PRESS BRIEFING at 17:00 TODAY – DETAILS TO COME
1. LULUCF report for Tuesday 6 December
Land Use, Land-Use Change and Forestry (LULUCF) in developed countries.
Today’s LULUCF
· Spin-off group on Chapter II, 11:30 – 13:00 (closed to observers)
Background:
· 30% of global emissions –17% forests + peatlands + agriculture + grazing land
· The scam continues: Loopholes undermine emissions reduction and integrity of targets
· All significant “sinks” and sources of emissions must be mandatorily accounted for. This includes:
Ø Forest management: logging + conversion of natural forests to plantations = ½ billion tons annually
Ø Wetland drainage and rewetting = ½ billion tons annually
Outlook: Ministers get text with loopholes today. Loopholes have been recognized for two years: any fix this year?
2. REDD+ report for Tuesday 6 December
Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation and the role of conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest carbon stocks in developing countries
TODAY’S LCA
· REDD meeting, 10:00 – 11:30, Honey Buchu (closed to observers)
Outlook: Work on financing (pages 30-31 in LCA text CRP.37) starting today.
3. Global Youth Demonstrate for Real Emissions Reductions and UN Climate Negotiations
· 13:00 – 14:00, between ICC and DEC Actions Area outside of Gate B
As UN negotiators meet to discuss the future of forest policy, the international youth constituency YOUNGO call for accurate accounting of all forestry greenhouse gas emissions. Youth will display a mural painted with a forest outside negotiating halls. Youth dressed as loggers will gradually expose loopholes revealing a second mural that features tree stumps and carbon emissions from biomass and plantations.
