REDD+ report for Friday 7 October
REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation and the role of conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest carbon stocks in developing countries)
Today’s Meeting: 10:45 – 11:30 - Informal Group on policy approaches and positive incentives on issues relating to REDD+ (in the Daily Programme: “agenda item 3.2.3” in the AWG-LCA, page 2)
Background: Yesterday’s meeting, which was open to observers, focused on three issues:
financing for REDD+ actions
· most countries supported a “basket” of options, a mixture of public and private sector funding
· some countries noted that public sources should be primary and used to leverage private funding
· the Accra Caucus of indigenous peoples stated their firm opposition to markets and offsets
scope of REDD+ actions
· vast majority of countries confirmed their support for the five activities in the Cancun Agreements
REDD+ financing v. Green Climate Fund (GCF)
· variety of opinions about how the GCF is just one element for REDD+ financing
· majority in support of independent financing for REDD+ outside of the GCF
Outlook: A previously unscheduled meeting today, closed to observers. No text has been released and delegates are expected to discuss how to move forward to Durban.
