FORESTS REPORT PANAMA – MONDAY 3 OCTOBER

Forest experts, campaigners and lawyers from the Ecosystems Climate Alliance will be reporting out this week on efforts to reduce deforestation and forest degradation in developing and developed countries from the UN climate change talks in Panama.
Since 2009, ECA has provided analysis to the media and advice and text to international negotiators on all three forest negotiating tracks:
· REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation and the role of conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest carbon stocks in developing countries)
Ø (in the Daily Programme: “agenda item 3.2.3” in the AWG-LCA, page 2)
· Land Use, Land-Use Change and Forestry (LULUCF) in attempts to secure a second commitment period for the Kyoto Protocol
Ø (in the Daily Programme: “Spin-off group on Chapter II” in the AWG-KP, page 1)
· REDD+ methodological guidance (in the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technical Advice (SBSTA))
Ø no meetings scheduled for Panama
REDD+ report for Monday 3 October
Informal Group on policy approaches and positive incentives on issues relating to REDD+
Time: 16:30 – 17:15
Background: Further discussion on REDD+ issues evolving from The Cancun Agreements.
Outlook: Three meetings on REDD+ are tentatively scheduled for Cancun. Today’s meeting is open to parties and observers and may deal with finance. ECA observers are available for background on REDD+ issues in The Cancun Agreements and will report on today’s meeting tomorrow morning.

Spin-off group on Chapter II
Time: 15:00 – 16:30
Background: Further discussion on rules and accounting for land-use, land-use change and forestry in attempts to secure a second commitment period for the Kyoto Protocol.
Outlook: Closed to observers. ECA observers will obtain information when possible.
