One Billion Tonnes of Forest and Land Emissions May Go Unaccounted
CANCUN – Countries at climate change talks in Cancun, Mexico this week are in closed door meetings on a deal to evade accounting for up to one billion tonnes of greenhouse gas pollution from the destruction of native forests and peatlands.

According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), science now allows to estimate greenhouse gas emissions from wetlands. This breakthrough was presented yesterday by the IPCC at the UN climate conference (UNFCCC) in Cancun (Mexico). This conclusion is crucial for allowing countries to reduce their emissions through rewetting drained wetlands. A decision on that will possibly be taken in Cancun.

Crucial Holes in Forest Deal Could Subsidise Forest Destruction
TIANJIN – The fate of the first global agreement to curb climate change by protecting forests is in the balance. Unless crucial holes are plugged, it could subsidise their destruction, warned forest and climate experts from the Ecosystems Climate Alliance (ECA) at UN climate change talks here today.

Non-existent accounting for burning of bioenergy
TIANJIN, CHINA – Greenhouse gas emissions from bioenergy1 – the development and burning of biofuels and the combustion of biomass to generate electricity – must be accounted for in national emission reduction targets under the Kyoto Protocol, say forest and climate experts from the Ecosystems Climate Alliance (ECA).

BONN, Germany – While only one meeting on reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries (REDD) was held at the UN climate talks which end here today, numerous discussions on a parallel initiative outside the UN framework occurred behind closed doors, warned forest and climate experts from the Ecosystems Climate Alliance today.

BONN, Germany – Rich developed countries are attempting to cheat on accounting for their carbon emissions from logging and will only agree to ambitious overall greenhouse gas reduction targets if they get the forestry loopholes they demand, warned the Ecosystems Climate Alliance today.
